Tall tales

According to Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature, a tall tale is a “narrative that depicts the extravagantly exaggerated wild adventures of North American [sic] folk heroes.”[1] The more the tales are told, the larger they become. Characters and events were usually based on something real. Genealogy and tall tales can be intermingled. The tales are also important maturing rites of passage, marking the transition from being the listener to being the storyteller.

Long before genealogists were writing Register reports on their word processors, storytelling was a way to capture and pass down information to younger generations. Through storytelling, the stories capture the larger-than-life events of the past: sometimes, with some magical or astonishing twist.

In my family, there was an enchanting tall tale of an ancestor who was given the gift of music from the Fairies. The McPherson family has been sharing the story of my great-great-great-great-grandfather, and his encounter with magical fairies, for several generations. My aunt has fond memories of her grandfather telling her about musical fairies from a magical place called Cape Breton. As a child, I remember my grandmother’s cousins sharing the story when they spoke about their Scottish heritage. When I started to research my grandmother’s family, the details of this magical tale came to life.

My grandmother was a McPherson, and her grandfather was Colin William McPherson (1863–1915). He was born in Richmond County, Cape Breton,[2] and moved to Boston in 1884.[3] Colin was the son of William Colin McPherson (1821–post 1901) and Ann Campbell (1826–ante 1891).[4] His mother was the daughter of Donald Campbell (1792–1878) and Catherine MacDonald (d. post 1901).[5] The McPherson and Campbell families lived at Lynche’s River, Cape Breton, near the canal at St. Peter’s on Bras d’Or Lake.

Generations of talented Campbell descendants have continued to entertain the people of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia with their music.

Donald Campbell was a famous Cape Breton fiddler during the mid-nineteenth century.[6] Generations of talented Campbell descendants have continued to entertain the people of Cape Breton and Nova Scotia with their music. In Cape Breton, the story of Donald Campbell and the magical fairies is legendary. His story has been written about in many books, magazines, and journals from the area.[7] In my opinion, the best rendition of the tale of Donald Campbell was in a song written and sung by David Stone, a dear friend and a cousin-of-a-cousin. His song, “Donald Campbell’s Faerie Bow,” captured all of the magical elements of my great-great-great-great-grandfather’s life.[8]

Donald Campbell was born in Argyllshire, Scotland[9] circa 1792[10] and died at Lynche’s River on 28 April 1878.[11] He was the son of John and Catherine (____) Campbell.[12] John Campbell was a private who served under General McLean in the Argyll Highlanders during the Revolutionary War; he was later granted land on Cape Breton for his service.[13]

After the War, the Campbell family settled on a parcel of land on Bras d’Or Lake.[14] The legend states that when Donald Campbell was a child, he was “abducted” by Fairies and given the gift of music through his special bow.[15] The family’s version of the tale was that Donald Campbell fell down the Fairy Hole and was rescued by the Fairies, who gave him the gift of music.[16] When he played, Donald Campbell would tune his bow in a unique way, which gave him a very distinctive sound.[17]

According to the histories, on the afternoon of the day that Donald Campbell died he was playing his fiddle. When the music stopped, they went to check on him and found him dead in his chair.[18]

Historians have questioned whether the story took place in Scotland or Cape Breton, but the Fairy Hole was listed on many maps of the Cape Breton area over the years, including this one by my great-great-uncle, William A. McPherson, Sr. (1977).[19]

In the summer of 2017, I had the opportunity to visit Cape Breton on a genealogical pilgrimage.  It was a fantastic experience I will never forget.  On a hot and humid day, the wonderful couple who now own the home that William Colin McPherson and Ann Campbell lived in treated me to a wonderful and special hike up Campbell Mountain.

Campbell Mountain was the location of the John Campbell homestead, and it was abandoned many decades ago. The house was long gone, and all that remained were overgrown woods. One of the places I had hoped to get to was the Fairy Hole, but the area was not safely accessible. Maybe, someday, my descendants might share stories of their larger-than-life genealogist ancestor, who tried to visit the Donald Campbell Fairy Hole.

  1. My great-grandfather left a memoir in which he stated that our first ancestor in the United States was a pirate. According to the story, the ancestor’s ship was captured and because he could read and write my ancestor was co-opted into the pirate crew. It qualifies as a tall tale, because Thomas Minor, the ancestor in question, came over about 1630 in the Great Migration. My theory is that someone telling the story did not know the difference between pirates and privateers and the Minors were unquestionably involved in privateering on Long Island Sound during the Revolution.

    1. Arr! Ahoy Matey! That is a great story. The mix up between Pirates and Privateers is quite common, Some pirates were privateers, but not all privateers were pirates.

      Did you know that the Privateers pre-date the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard. They were instrumental in the American Revolutionary War and War of 1812. The United States Merchant Marine was founded from Privateers who served during the Revolutionary War.

    2. I first met your Minor ancestors in 1978, when I began volunteering at the Joshua Hempstead House in New London, Connecticut. The Hempstead and Minor families intermarried and were very close. As I read Joshua’s diary, which he kept from 1711 until his death in 1758, I had an intimate view of the Joshua’s daily life and those he interacted with…both in family events and in business. I believe as a Minor family member you would find reading Joshua’s diary to be fascinating (if you can get past the weekly “Mr. Smith, Adams, et al preached all day” entries. The diary is available online through archive.org.

  2. When I was in junior high, we were assigned to make family trees, and I was dismayed to find no one famous in mine (one good friend was a distant cousin of Johnny Appleseed — I was SO jealous). My Dad said, “Just tell them you come from a long line of Kentucky horse thieves.”
    Of course, i took it as a joke, just as he intended it. However, sixty years later, I found my gggg grandfather, a Baptist preacher no less, cited in the court records of Estill County, Kentucky. Seems he found a stray bay mare, and instead of “posting” her to find the owner, he sold her and kept the money.

  3. It’s not difficult to see how modern day Celts and Native Americans often feel a certain kinship in terms of their political histories, and especially in their views of the cosmos. Receiving the gift of music from the fairies is not unlike the varied gifts given by animals and other natural entities in any number of Native American tales. What a very special ancestral gift indeed…though I’m sorry you didn’t get to see the Fairy Hole! Incidentally, I was just thinking a day or so ago about a McPherson ancestor I have who was supposedly abducted from Scotland and brought to America in the 18th century. When my mother visited his birthplace years ago, the tour guide knew all about Daniel McPherson and had spoken with many American descendants who had made the same pilgrimage over the years.

  4. As a child, I was captivated by the thought of Mother’s French grandmother, the one she always said she was named after. A French grandmother sounded so glamorous, so exotic, so foreign. I imagined a dark-eyed young woman with hair piled high, wearing a lot of taffeta and lace, a cameo on a black velvet ribbon nestled at her throat. As I grew older, I would sometimes wonder what combination of life circumstances could propel a woman to leave behind the ancient arcades, grand boulevards, and candlelit cafes of the Paris to travel to the bleached nothingness of the Kansas prairie where she lived with her husband in a sod house. I could not imagine any woman giving up civilized life in Europe to live in a burrow where she had to toss snakes out of the bed. As the family genealogist, I have been digging around for years, trying to unearth Mother’s French grandmother from oblivion in the Midwest. Little by little, I was able to piece together an emerging portrait of a woman, not from Paris, but from –
    – Illinois. For two decades I worked backwards in time, discovering along the way that poor Eudella’s name had been unglamorously anglicized from the original Eudalie. I labored over the parish registers and notarial records of French Canada, and learned about the fur trade, the Carignan Regiment and the Daughters of the King. And I finally realized that there was, in fact, a seed of truth in Mother’s assertion: her grandmother was French. She just wasn’t from France. In fact, by the time Eudella was born in 1863, none of her ancestors had lived in France for two hundred years or more.

While I have not yet found encounters with pirates, privateers or fairies in my genealogical adventures, my father’s family “history” was documented in James Quinlan’s 1873 “History of Sullivan County”. Typical of many county history books of the period, it is strong on exaggeration and insinuation, but weak on documentation. The book alternates between dry documentation and dramatic story telling. However, it has scattered bread crumbs that I will be continuing to follow the rest of my life. Untwisting tales of betrayal, murder (descendants of both the victim and the believed murderer (who was never formally accused) intermarried. Quinlan stated the day of said murder was one of the happiest in the history of the county! Other chapters mention the extreme piety and bravery of another ancestor who was a circuit minister encountering wolves, bears and panthers whilst forging rivers and streams in the Catskill Mountains. If your family seems to be lacking in tall tales, I whole heartedly recommend seeking out your family in those late 19th century county history books. You are likely to uncover some engaging stories.
